A very smoggy look to the north-northwest into Seoul's old city core. It is a very clear, sunny day, but because of the smog, does not look the part. Due to the explosive growth, urbanization, and automobile traffic, Seoul's smog became legendary. And in the 1990s, Korean automakers had not perfected adequate emissions controls, and buses were powered by dirty high-sulfur diesel fuel, making the smog worse than anything Los Angeles ever sees, and on par with that of Mexico City. I would return here in 2008 for a much clearer view, in part due to weather and in part due to better air quality control. Also this being 1994, some newer buildings, such as the Jongno Tower, are not visible, and Seoul's cut-rate postwar architecture, which was just about to start getting remedied, is very evident here. My vantage point is Seoul Tower. Although the tower's official name at the time was Seoul Tower, and colloquially it was known as Namsan Tower, it was later re-branded and renovated as N-Seoul Tower. National Geographic, for its March 1969 issue, had taken a photo of downtown Seoul from this vantage point (though at the foot of the tower, as the tower was not complete until later in 1969). There were virtually no buildings taller than 10 stories in that photo, and the city is practically unrecognizable. A key difference would be the utter lack of smog in the 1969 photo, as there were less than 20,000 automobiles in the whole city then, compared to about a million in 1994 and 3 million in 2008. |
